Milan in one day: the itinerary

Let's take ours as a starting point tour milanese the station Porta Garibaldi. It is easily reachable with the M2 lines (which also passes through the Central Station) and M5 of the metro, and also with the railway link.

Gae Aulenti Square

Once outside the station, regardless of how you get there, reach the closest Porta Nuova district. There you will find the splendid Gae Aulenti Square with the Unicredit Tower, the tallest skyscraper in Milan. Continue towards the BAM–Biblioteca degli Alberi and admire the Vertical Forest, awarded as the most beautiful skyscraper in the world in 2015, and the Aria and Solaria towers with their characteristic blue terraces.

Completed the tour of the district, head towards Moscow. To get there you will have to cross Corso Como, one of the centers of Milanese nightlife.
From Moscova take via Palermo and reach the neighborhood Brera, one of the most characteristic of the city. Pass in front of the Art gallery and if you have time, stop and take a look at its wonderful courtyard.

From the Brera 's picture gallery, continuing straight ahead you arrive at the wonderful Teatro alla Scala. Cross the road and reach the majestic one Vittorio Emanuele Gallery, which houses shops inside, highly prestigious cafes and restaurants. Follow it all the way and you will find yourself in front of the Milan Cathedral, the true beating heart of the Milanese city.

From this moment on, I propose two alternatives to continue your quest to see Milan in one day.

Two alternative routes

Milan is big, and clearly you can't see everything in just one day. I advise you to choose one of these two alternatives based on your tastes and needs.

Towards the Navigli

Let's get back to us. Once those canons have passed 10-15 minutes to admire the beauty of the Duomo, take via Turin. It is one of the low cost shopping streets in Milan. You will be able to find shops like Zara, Stradivarius, Pull & Bear, Primark, Calliope and many others.

I recommend you take a quick look at Church of San Satiro, designed by Bramante. Inside you will find a perspective game that will amaze you: seeing is believing!
Furthermore, within walking distance you will also find the Ambrosiana Art Gallery which I advise you to visit if you have some’ of time available. It preserves priceless masterpieces by Leonardo, Raphael and Caravaggio, as well as part of the very famous Codex Atlanticus, better known as The Da Vinci Code.

See Milan in one day: Navigli

Continue along via Torino until you reach Columns of San Lorenzo, of Roman origin, in front of the basilica of the same name. Continue along Corso di Porta Ticinese and reach the Darsena, iconic place in Milan, completely remodeled for the Expo 2015.
From the Darsena you will be there Navigli within a few minutes. It will probably be getting late and I assure you that the Navigli are famous for their abundant and delicious aperitifs. You will be spoiled for choice!

To return home from the Navigli you will have the Porta Genova FS station at your disposal, the M2 stop of the same name and the tram 9.

From the Sforzesco Castle to Monumentale

Rewind! Let's pretend that you are still dazed in front of the Duomo. Bene, take it from there Dante Street, with its splendid buildings and shops.

Walk the whole way until you reach the entrance Sforza Castle. Once owned by the Viscontis of Milan, it is now home to a very important civic museum. Did you know that the Castle hosts one of the three Compassion by Michelangelo (the Rondanini Pieta)?

See Milan in one day: Sempione Park
Panoramic view of the Sforzesco Castle from Sempione Park

Once you have crossed the Castle and its courtyards, you will find yourself at Sempione Park, the main green area of the city. Enjoy a walk among lakes and green meadows and reach the other end, where you will find it’Arch of Peace, built in the 19th century in honor of Napoleon.

From the Arco della Pace turn right and reach China Town o, as the Milanese say, “Paolo Sarpi” (from the name of the street). China Town is the perfect place to snack on some great gyoza, steam dumplings or drink some amazing bubble tea.

As a last stop, head towards the Monumental Cemetery of Milan. Entrance is free and it is a real open-air museum. Some of the monumental tombs were sculpted by artists of the caliber of Achille Castiglioni and Lucio Fontana. Furthermore, it is the burial place of great figures of the past such as Alessandro Manzoni and Salvatore Quasimodo. Listen to me, remember to wear clothing appropriate for a sacred place.

To return from Monumentale you can take the M5 metro to the stop of the same name, or approximately 5-10 minutes walk you will be back in Garibaldi.

Let me know if you will follow my advice and if you will be able to see Milan in one day!
